Choosing outdoor chairs: polypropylene, cast aluminium or rattan?

For terraces, gardens and pool areas, the material decides durability, upkeep and look. We compare the three most common options from a project point of view.

Air chair in outdoor use

Outdoor furniture faces a tougher test than indoor pieces: sun, rain, humidity and heavy use all at once. The right material decides how many seasons a chair will last and how much time daily care will take. In this post we compare the three options we meet most often in projects, using the real material data of products on our site.

Start with how the chairs will be used

A few questions make the material choice much easier:

  • Will the chairs stay outside all year, or be stored at the end of the season?
  • Is there room to stack and store them?
  • Is the area windy, or close to the sea or a pool?
  • How many guests a day, and will tables be rearranged often?

Glass-fibre reinforced polypropylene

The most popular group for café, restaurant and hotel terraces. Siesta's Air, Diva and Maya are made of glass-fibre reinforced polypropylene using gas injection. Tilia's Louise, Ali and Duo have bodies of UV-stabilised, pigmented, glass-fibre polypropylene.

  • Light: Staff can move and rearrange them easily.
  • Easy to clean: A damp cloth is enough; spilled drinks leave no marks.
  • Stacking: Many models stack; Tilia product pages list the stacking quantity.
  • Colour: Most models come in many colours.

UV stabilisation and stacking vary by model, so we recommend checking the materials table on each product page before deciding.

Cast aluminium

The choice when a classic, patterned look and some weight are needed. Cast Garden's Queen and Rose have injection-cast aluminium frames; the surface is sand-blasted and electro-phosphated, then finished with electrostatic oven-baked powder coating. Plastic feet protect the floor.

  • Weight: An advantage on windy terraces and rooftops.
  • Look: Suits boutique hotels, mansion restaurants and garden cafés.
  • Colour: Most models are offered in 12–16 colours.

Rattan and aluminium lounge sets

Lounge areas, hotel gardens and pool-side seating are usually planned as sets. Dengema's Alya and Ela are woven rattan sets with a table, a three-seat sofa and two armchairs. Protecting cushions when not in use extends their life.

Quick comparison

  • Moved and stacked often: Polypropylene
  • Windy areas, classic look: Cast aluminium
  • Lounge and relaxation areas: Rattan or aluminium lounge sets
