Restaurant tables: choosing bases and tops, fixed or folding?

In restaurants and cafés, tables are often built by choosing the base and the top separately. Fixed vs folding bases, top sizes and choosing by venue.

Air Masa 140 table in outdoor use

In contract furniture, tables are often built by choosing the base and the top separately. This lets you use the same base with tops of different sizes and materials, and build a flexible layout for each venue.

Fixed base

The most common solution for restaurants and cafés where tables rarely move. Tilia's Moon Fixed base consists of a cross base, feet and an aluminium column, made of UV-stabilised, pigmented, glass-fibre polypropylene and polyamide.

Folding base

With the top folded down, tables can be stored leaning against each other. Useful where layouts change often, such as meeting and event halls or seasonal terraces.

Castor base

If tables need to be moved often in meeting and training rooms, bases with castors and a folding mechanism, such as Snap-L, make the job easier.

Wider bases for larger tops

The larger the top, the wider the base should be; otherwise the table can tip when someone leans on the edge. Alongside the 49 cm cross base, the Moon family offers the 67 cm Moon-L Fixed. Siesta's Air bases also come in small, medium and large.

A wooden look

For a warmer interior, the wooden-legged Lamax-V2 Square and Lamax-V2 Rectangular bases assemble with a metal connector and an easy-fit part.

Top materials

  • HPL/CPL compact top: Resistant to knocks and moisture; also suitable outdoors.
  • Polypropylene top: Light and easy to clean.
  • Glass top: A more elegant look for interiors and covered terraces.

Base-to-top compatibility and maximum top size vary by model, so we recommend asking us when choosing. See all bases in our table bases category.
