In cafés, restaurants and hotels, polypropylene chairs are chosen because they are easy to clean. Even so, the wrong cleaner or a hard sponge can dull or scratch the surface over time.
Know the surface
- Matt, textured surface: Tilia models such as Louise and Duo have a matt, highly abrasion-resistant surface where small scratches show less.
- Glass-fibre reinforced polypropylene: Siesta's Diva and Air are made by gas injection.
- Clear polycarbonate: Clear models such as Helena-PC, Allegra and Elizabeth need more careful cleaning.
Daily cleaning
- Wipe with a damp cloth, lukewarm water and a little neutral detergent.
- If dirt stays in textured surfaces, use a soft-bristled brush.
- Rinse with clean water and dry with a cloth, which also prevents water marks on clear models.
Common mistakes
- Steel wool or hard sponges: Leave shiny marks on matt surfaces and scratches on clear ones.
- Solvent-based products: Solvents such as acetone or thinner can damage plastic surfaces.
- Alcohol-based and abrasive cleaners on clear models: Can cause clouding and fine cracks in polycarbonate. A microfibre cloth and soapy water are enough.
- Stacking wet chairs: Can cause water marks and odours.
Check the feet
Feet caps protect the floor and stop chairs from sliding. In busy venues, check them periodically for wear.
Outdoors
Dust and pollen build up faster on chairs used outside. Regular washing during the season, and cleaning and stacking them in a dry place at the end of it, extends their life.
