How to choose bar stool height: 65 cm or 75 cm?

The most common mistake with bar stools is a seat height that doesn’t match the counter. Which counters suit 65 and 75 cm stools, and how to work it out.

The first measurement to check when buying bar stools is the difference between seat height and counter or table height. If it is wrong, guests either knock their knees on the counter or struggle to reach it.

The basic rule

A widely used starting point is a difference of about 25–35 cm between seat height and counter height.

  • Kitchen islands and lower counters (about 90–95 cm): 65 cm seat height
  • Bar counters and bar tables (about 105–110 cm): 75 cm seat height

We recommend measuring the top of your counter from the floor before deciding.

65 and 75 cm options

Many Tilia bar models come in both heights:

As a bar table, the Moon Bar Ø60 cm, for example, is 111 cm high and is used with 75 cm stools.

With or without a backrest?

  • Backless stool: Takes little space and slides fully under the counter; good for short stays (Duo Bar).
  • Bar chair with backrest: More comfortable for longer stays (Gozo Bar, Nes Bar).
  • With armrests: The most comfortable, but takes more room (Shell-M Bar with arms).

Footrest and material

On high stools, a footrest bar adds comfort so feet don't hang. Metal-legged models such as the Laser-M Bar look slimmer; polypropylene models are light and can also be used outdoors.

Layout

Allowing about 55–60 cm of counter width per guest lets people sit without bumping elbows.

Stacking

Terrace bars may need stools cleared away in the evening. According to the product pages, Duo Bar stacks 9 high and Gozo Bar 6 high.
