A cushion on a polypropylene or metal chair adds comfort and colour. Outdoors, cushions face sun, moisture and frequent cleaning, so they need to be chosen more carefully.

Foam: density and thickness

Foam density decides whether a cushion keeps its shape without sagging over time. According to the product data of Tilia cushions:

Fabric

Outdoors, how the fabric behaves with water and moisture matters. The Maris lounger cushion comes in waterproof fabric types. When choosing fabric, also think about how colours behave in the sun and how easy they are to clean.

Zipped covers

With zipped cushions, the cover can be removed and cleaned. In busy hotel and café areas, this detail extends cushion life.

Fastening: no sliding in the wind

  • Velcro strap: Due, Gia and Tia cushions attach to the chair with Velcro and can be removed when needed.
  • Loose: Lounger cushions such as Maris rest on the seat without fastening, so they may need collecting on windy days.

Shell-backed cushions

Some cushions have a shaping shell underneath. Gia uses a polypropylene shell; Tia and the Mia Bar Chair Cushion use a wooden (plywood) shell, so the cushion fits the chair exactly.

Everyday tips

  • Bring cushions inside at night and in the rain.
  • Dry wet cushions upright.
  • At the end of the season, clean the covers and store the cushions somewhere dry.
